Anyone who thinks that R&B artist Cici became an instant hit out of nowhere may not be aware of a long and winding road she took before anyone knew her name.
Cici, the sixth child in a family of eight children, dared to be different - and found her audience. Cici’s first words as a baby were from a Brenda Fassie song. 28 years on, she’s just won best R&B single and best compilation album at the Metro FM Music Awards.
After working in cabaret from Bloemfontein to Turkey and the Seychelles, Cici knows how to style herself. With her Instagram followers up to 13 000 now, Cici is keeping them inspired.
Ice skating is a favourite pastime, although between competing on 3 TV talent shows and her cabaret, there’s been little time for this. Cici says that Brenda Fassie also got her to walk as her first steps were to Brenda’s song Me do do. This is some way from where she grew up, the child of a Minister in Ladysmith who called her his ‘radio’. It was her mother’s singing voice that her father fell in love with. Having inherited that gift, Cici has the nation falling for a talent which friends always knew was special.
This month Cici performs in Manchester, England, she’s busy filming two music videos and a countrywide tour of her full album is set to follow.
