A masterpiece of a home by architect Mpendulo Dlamini
When architect Mpendulo Dlamini is challenged to design a home making the most of this monumental view – the man knocks his brief right out of the park.
Architect Mpendulo Dlamini had an interesting brief for this house. His client took him mountain biking, waterskiing, on a helicopter flight over the site - and then effectively gave him free reign to create this modern country villa.
The ambition of this design is a trademark of Mpendulo Dlamini. Growing up with a carpenter and a seamstress as his grandparents, he too wanted to create for a living and he’s done it in grand style, here on Ebenezer Dam in Limpopo.
The owner was after sophisticated details and finishes while also insisting that local builders and tradesmen got the opportunity to do the job. The results make Mpendulo especially proud.
The brief put a lot responsibility on the architect. There had to be views of the water from every part of the house. How, and in which style and proportion - was entirely up to him.
For all the praise which Mpendulo’s design has received, the best compliment was when the owner commissioned him to do four more projects.
Six years ago, this young architect established his practice. When families entrusted him with their homes, he surpassed their expectations. His reputation grew, as did the scale of his work and this house puts him at the leading edge of all that is exciting about South African architecture in 2018.
