The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre is legendary and this New York based dance group are back in South Africa after 17 years!
From a fabled New York City performance in 1958, led by Alvin Ailey and a group of young African-American modern dancers, the company has gone on to perform to 25 million people. This year Artistic Director Robert Battle has brought them back to South African, celebrating a historic return that'll see them perform sold out shows in Joburg and Cape Town. Luckily for us, and for you, we've got a front row seat and a backstage pass.
The company’s earliest work drew on a vibrant mix of ballet, modern dance, jazz, and African dance, with a combination of blues, spiritual and gospel music. It's still kept true to its origins, but has also managed to stay relevant and modern. With the show having been around for more than five decades, we chat to a few of the dance stars to find out what gives the show its longevity, and how it manages to remain vital and vibrant.
This unparalleled show runs at The Artscape Theatre Centre in Cape Town until Sunday 20 September, so make sure to get there any way you can!
