Art museums across the globe snap up the work of Nandipha Mntambo
Nandipha Mntambo’s change from studying forensic science to fine art seemed quite a gamble until her work began selling to museums across the world.
It was the cowhide sculptures modelled on her own body which won Nandipha the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Visual Art in 2011. She works in drawings, videos, photography and began to explore painting five years ago.
Having spent years working with and processing cowhides - paint and gold leaf is a far more pleasant medium to work in.
To see the full effect, we took in Nandi’s latest collection at the Stevenson Gallery in Braamfontein. The reflective metallic of the gold leaf allows the otherwise dark works to project light.
Nandi’s work is held by the Zeits Mocca in Cape Town, the High Museum in Atlanta and the Smithsonian in Washington DC.
