We spend the night with our South African Olympic Team.
The Olympics make us crazy for sport. The athletes’ dedication and excellence, our flag on their backs, it all reflects the best of us, who we want to be. You could feel it the night of the Olympics banquet when Team South Africa got quite a send-off.
The squad’s first stop was to invest 67 minutes for Madiba Day by planting trees at Usizolwethu School. As our first democratic President made clear, the legacy he wants is not cast in copper but a living legacy of volunteer service. At the Olympic banquet we met canoeists, gymnasts, badminton players - a team of sportsmen and women as diverse as our country – who’ve all spent years getting here.
Our golfers are always contenders and this year’s squad captain is The Black Knight himself. Another legend in the house was Ahmed Kathrada who knows the power the Olympics has to set an example. We wish our athletes all the best!
