Golden fire A flue-less gas fireplace can be installed in a day and provides plenty of warmth for those chilly winter nights
PRODUCTION CHRISTIAAN VAN NIEKERK, LEE STOPFORTH PHOTOGRAPHS GUNTHER GRÄTER
The Syam range of flue-less fireplaces are available countrywide from Builders Warehouse. They are extremely well designed, with a range of safety features to ensure that you have hours of hasslefree operation. We designed a simple supawood box to clad the fireplace; this ensures that you can take it with you if you move house.
SAFETY INFORMATION The Syam fireplace has a number of safety features –a flame-failure device (or thermo-couple) is constantly in the pilot flame; this ensures that when the flame goes out, the device cools off, sending a signal to the gas valve to shut off.
An oxygen-depletion sensor (ODS) makes sure that sustainable oxygen is available in the room: should the normal atmospheric oxygen content of 22 percent drop to below 14 percent, then the ODS will shut off the gas valve. Any gas installation must be done by a person accredited by the LP Gas Safety Association of South Africa.

Step 1 Once all the supawood has been pre-cut at a hard-wear store according to the dimensions, it’s a cinch to construct this simple box that will clad the fireplace unit and provide a stable plinth to raise it off the floor. Be sure to install the fireplace in a room with sufficient cross-ventilation – ask your gas installer for more information on the suitability of the room in which you intend to install the fireplace.
Step 2 Using the Bosch Posidriver and 2mm wood bit, drill pilot holes 8mm from the edges of the Supawood (where the joints occur) at 150mm intervals. Now insert the countersink bit and enlarge the holes on the sides that the screws will be applied so that the screws can be countersunk and the holes filled with woodfiller, using the putty knife.
Step 3 Once both the cladding to the box and plinth are constructed, prime and paint the plinth black and the sides and top of the cladding gold. Repeat with a second coat. |
Step 4 You will see that the black powdercoated facia provided with the fireplace fits tightly over the edges of the supawood cladding. High-end luxury replica watches on sale online. |
Step 5 Cut a 450mm-wide strip of geyser blanket using a cutter and wrap tightly around the fireplace unit. This will prevent excessive heat loss when operating the fireplace. Now, using the jigsaw, cut a slot in the base of the supawood cladding the same size as the grate (this is essential to house the undercarriage of the grate with the gas connections).
Step 6 Place the supawood plinth in position then place the Syam fireplace in the supawood box. Clip on the facia and tighten the screws. Install the grate and get a registered LP Gas Installer to install the gas supply. |
Step 7 Insert the vermiculite and pebbles. These enable the flame to be evenly distributed when switched on. Light up and enjoy!
