Designer Laurie Wiid van Heerden shows Top Billing his work
Since he began experimenting with cork, Laurie’s work was won awards for production excellence, branding, original design and for its impact in the worlds of art, the environment and social upliftment.
Born to parents who are entrepreneurs in tourism and education, he’s inherited their flair for business. Drawing inspiration from the 1950s, Laurie uses a lot of curves and shapes in his design, and consumers are loving it.
His business, Wiid Design Studio, works with products like cork because it’s lightweight, easy to export, very tactile, and a very warm natural material that consumers seem to gravitate toward. The fact that it is environmentally sustainable is another huge advantage.
Cork trees live for three hundred years, with their bark producing light, buoyant, fire retardant material on an ongoing basis as they continue to grow.
The cork in this lamp is entirely organic and recyclable, won Best Lighting Design, and set the record for the world’s largest cork pendant.
This accolade, along with many others, are the reason why renowned international design and décor consultancies like Robert Sherwood’s are vying to collaborate with Laurie.
The new Spektrum collection in glass and cork shows he is as prolific as ever – in an industry which demands it. What keeps him ahead is having learned not to worry, but to come back at problems with a positive mindset, in the morning. Clearly, it’s working.
