Rubicon Clothing's Hangwani Nengovhela shares her story on Top Billing
Rubicon’s Hangwani Nengovhela creates fashion catches the eye of South Africa’s most elegant women.
Nature and history are an endless form of inspiration to designer Hangwani Nengovhela. Her fashion is more about art than trend and it’s made her a favourite of prominent South African women, including our own Bassie Kumalo.
Hangwani Nengovhela has risen from a young designer selling her outfits from home to over a decade on the runways at SA Fashion Week - and to having Bassie model her finale.
This collection, rich in aubergines and dusty pinks is sure to be snapped up by the boutiques she supplies nationally and as far as Botswana and Tanzania. Hangwani’s classic cuts have showcased successfully in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Switzerland, China and France.
It was the demands of raising and supporting a young family with her husband which drove this young creative to teach herself design and which ultimately led here. At home she’s a happily married mother of two. At work in her Randburg studio she’s a business dynamo.
The entrepreneur remains a thoroughly hands on designer. Hangwani’s meticulous attention to detail was learned from her mother and grandmother who insisted on total pride in their work.
Next, this calm but fierce talent will look to extending her brand into homeware and focus on training new, up and coming designers to follow her. They will be lucky apprentices indeed.
