Humble beginnings to super star with TV presenter Katlego Maboe
Top Billing goes back to where it all began for the much loved Expresso presenter.
On the one hand, Katlego Maboe is an accountant from Potch. On the other, he’s the two-time SAFTA best TV presenter award-winner for his work on Expresso and Strictly Come Dancing and he’s a performer at home on any stage. Perhaps it’s that calm, small town upbringing that makes him Mr. Cool on camera.
Katlego grew up in Ikageng Township, Potchefstroom in North West Province. His mother, Beauty Maboe, was a teacher near Lichtenburg so he and his sisters lived with Beauty’s parents, closer to where school was. Here he exercised his talents as a singer too.
As smart as he is entertaining, he speaks English, Setswana, Xhosa, Zulu and Afrikaans. His friend Stephen Tsebela takes us through their varsity days and where it all began, at the University of North West campus where they both studied. At NWU, Katlego’s singing brought him to the attention of an acapella group called Flip a Coin who asked him to join them.
With Katlego’s voice and beatboxing skills, Flip A Coin went on to record three albums. His favourite hometown memory was the day he got into Potchefstroom Central School where he was introduced to Mrs. Parsons. He was so excited about his new school, that when his mother sent him to buy bread, he came back with milk!
Giving others a chance, he’s also regularly involved with education and health charities. He just won favourite TV presenter at this year’s YOU Spectacular Awards and he’s using that popularity to spread a serious message with his song, Race Against Time.
