Interior designer Dorothy vant Riet invites us into her home
Top Billing features interior designer Dorothy van’t Riet’s home
We take a look at the award winning designer’s own home.
A winner of the World’s Best Interior Designer Award in both the classic and contemporary categories at the International Property Awards, Dorothy’s first inspiration were her grandmother’s homes. As a girl, she picked flowers to fill her gran’s crystal vases, rearranged furniture and so began the career that’s made her a household name, taken her across the globe – and back.
Married for 24 years, Dorothy and her husband Bernard both have a sharp mind for figures. She studied maths, he’s a CA with an MBA who handles the financial side of her business.
One of Dorothy’s first memories was of her grandfather explaining the colours on the colour chart to her. A judge and a creative artist, his flair lives on in her. For aspiring designers or homeowners in over their heads when it comes to interiors, Dorothy’s developed an “Urban Chic Design in a Box Kit” packed with her insights.
Dorothy chose their home as a lock-up-and-go to suit their frequent travels. Three en-suite bedrooms mean visits are always on from their daughters Nicky, a human rights lawyer and Sam an architect, who often works with her mom. Dorothy’s grandparents would be rightly proud of what became of their gifted little granddaughter.
