Interior designer Leighton Clapton shows us his own space
Interior designer Leighton Clapton creates such dramatic spaces for his clients, and now we get to see his own space.
This three bed apartment makeover is on a smaller scale then Leighton is used to. His prior design briefs for penthouses have had refurbishment budgets you could buy a palatial home with.
So, what could he achieve with 200 square metres? This dramatic space was almost not seen as a kitchen. It’s design breaks up the space through a centre-piece, bulkheads above and a quirky breakfast table like the prow of a ship. There is an evening mood to the apartment and the art echoes the décor.
The process took just twelve weeks from start to finish and with the apartment’s owner being needed on site for jobs around the country, it’s both a safe lock up and go and luxurious work space. A champion of original art, Leighton arguably finds as many buyers for homegrown work as a gallery might. Wherever possible, he will replace old prints with those of new, up and coming artists.
These bring individual character to each room within the consistent colour scheme. Emphasis is created in the accessories. Fabric with a soft textured finish is used with luscious velvets and in the main bedroom, the palette ranges from silver starlit colours to the deep African, Wenge wood carpentry.
Being in sight of the Waterfront and stadium, the balcony demands that time is spent outdoors and the master of the house has included a generous outdoor entertainment area with custom built-in braai.
