Jeannie explores Kaia wine bar in New York
South African reds and live jazz are a hit at Kaia wine bar in New York City! Join Jeannie D as we pay it a visit this Saturday at 6PM on #TopBilling. Suzaan Hauptfleisch set up shop on the Upper East Side with little money but a strong gut feeling this would work. Her menu is defined by having grown up in a farm kitchen, she serves wine by the glass so that people keep trying something new and her formula is a hit. Suzaan’s drive to promote a range of South African wines in America is a mission shared by New York importer and wine expert, Sam Timberg.
The night we visited, Kaia hosted S.A. trumpeter living in New York, Lesedi Ntsane - and his Azanian People’s-Movement Jazz band. Having lost a legend in Bra Hugh, playing on is the best tribute Lesedi can give. At a venue which celebrates the best that South Africa has to share with the world.
Suzaan has created a new kind of fusion cooking with a strong emphasis on ethical, sustainable food enjoyed in the warm spirit of African hospitality.
