Among several striking homes on this estate, one stands out. The owner asked that it reflect his passion for polo and provide a luxurious home for his family. The answer was an American-inspired take on nineteenth century architecture – designed by John Jacob.
John uses lines and intensity of colour to create what he calls a language. Like any language, it has rules. One of them is proportion and if you get it right, a room stirs emotion in anyone who enters.
Each room’s distinct colour gives it unique character within the greater look. The homeowner wanted a rich feel but one which still allowed a sense of personality and intimacy.
The ability to achieve such subtle balance, within one room or between one distinct room and another, is a hallmark of John’s work. It’s what put him in the Andrew Martin Awards international directory of top 100 interior designers.
Beneath its old-world character, the house generates enough solar energy to heat water and feed electricity back into the grid during the day. The owner gets to enjoy the good life while doing his bit for the planet.
Outside, solar panels don’t interrupt the majestic slate roof thanks to a solar garden concealed by the landscaping. The kind of design Francois Louw made happen on a daily basis.
