Maui island getaway
Tucked in a lush enclave on a secluded peninsula in Maui, this modernist surf hut merges art and architecture.
It was built in 2009 by Tom Kundig of Olson Kundig Architects for photographer Peter Lik. The property, known as Aura, is located in Kapalua Resort, which is also home to the Ritz-Carlton. It’s minutes from restaurants, shopping, and golf courses. Perched on a rocky bluff, the home affords staggering panoramic vistas of Honolua Bay.
The property is divided into three separate huts. The main living quarters are located in the center hut, with the master suite and guest suite flanking it north and south. Each is unified by cedar-lined ceilings with exposed beams.
Some of the most innovative features include two hydraulic steel-framed glass walls in the main living area, which open to create a seamless indoor-outdoor living space.

Outside, 6.5 acres of tropical splendor create a verdant sanctuary. There’s a pool lined by fire bowls, a Zen garden, and a patio crafted from lava stone. Meticulous lawns are divided by columns and walkways made of chiseled basalt.
