Mpho Vackier shares her journey from engineer to designer
Mpho Vackier must first becomes an engineer to fulfil her dream of being an interior designer and she shares her incredible story on Top Billing this week.
Growing up as the daughter of a seamstress, Mpho had a love for design from a young age. Studying fashion design was her dream but, lacking funds, she took up the offer of a bursary in the engineering field. Seven years ago, she left a career in mining, studied design and never looked back.
Having an engineering background helped Mpho establish a product design studio and with unfailing belief from her husband Harald, she’s turned creative flair into a thriving business.
The couple met in Phalaborwa. A year later they were engaged and as well as being a mechanical engineer Harald is an excellent cook.
The couple’s combined talents of practical, mechanical understanding and creative flair are reflected in their home and in someone they proudly consider their greatest collaboration – their gifted, eight year old son Xavier. Mpho says her son projects a serious exterior but is a riot of fun once you know him. She wanted his room to express those different sides to his nature.
Innovation and energy are the ingredients that the design industry is after and Mpho has brought both, combined with her engineer’s knack for problem solving.
Asked what her recipe for success is, this dynamic lady advises that you ‘Work harder, dream bigger, think broader’. Coming from a woman like Mpho, that’s advice worth taking.
