The future is looking bright for young music star, Emtee.
We’re only in July but already, 2016 belongs to this man. Born Mthembeni Ndevu, Emtee is from the Eastern Cape and grew up in Rockville, Soweto. He was the youngest choir conductor at Barnato Park High School, won several provincial competitions in his school's marimba band and broad influences always shaped his music.
It’s increasingly rare for Emtee to be able to go incognito in public. Last year his hit 'Roll Up Re-up' earned him his first award for Song Of The Year at the South African Hip Hop Awards. In March, his debut album Avery took four Metro FM Music Awards followed by Best Rap Album at the SAMAs.
It was time to stop and take stock. His Record of the Year Award at the SAMAs reflects his broader appeal and willingness to try the new and the different. Whilst he appeared to come out of nowhere, he’s been steadily accumulating skills, influences and an idea of what kind of music sells.
His success would come as no surprise to those who’ve seen how hard he works behind the scenes. Based on his experiences and the amount of talent he’s seen in South Africa, Emtee’s launching a label.
For young acts struggling to get going, he will be an ideal producer. He’s noticed that other acts are venturing into his sound and far from being threatened by it, he’s taking them under his wing.
