Like the whales which appear off Hermanus each Spring, every year, fresh South African musical talent emerges as if from nowhere. But with chart-topping duo New Hope, as with those whales, it has been quite a journey getting here.
Since Keaton Carelse and Scottie Moore formed New Hero last year, they have had four, number one, hit singles. Crazy is the latest single from the guys and its mysterious video has generated a huge buzz in no time.
We were in South Africa’s whale capital of Hermanus at the height of the season and with a man who is crazy for these ocean giants.
For a quarter of a century, the Whale crier of Hermanus has patrolled these cliffs, alerting visitors to whale sightings and the reigning guardian of the kelp horn is Thambimkosi Bravo Sobazile.
Bravo grew up in rural Eastern Cape, studied BCom Management but lacked funds to continue. Not one to let that ground him, his flair for customer service and interest in marine life landed him the job of Whale Crier and next he wants to study tourism or aqua culture.
True to his heritage, Scottie chooses golf as a hobby but insists that he’s terrible at it. Just as well there is the music. The best news is that the guys hope to release an album by the end of the year!
