Top Billing catches up with DJ Tira
DJ Tira and NaaqMusiq are off to Ibiza but not before giving us the scoop on their upcoming Summer album.
Mthokozisi Khathi may have graduated with a degree in human resources but his heart always belonged to music. Since he began DJíng varsity parties twenty years ago, he has become a lynchpin of the kwaito and club scene - with a massive three million followers on social media, some big name signings to his label and a dance audience abroad.
Among Tira’s most fulfilling collaborations is with Anga Makubalo a.k.a. NaakMusiq. The two met in PE as Anga’s acting career was taking off on Generations. Impressed by his ‘musical’ talent, Tira signed him to his label.
Homegrown dance music has evolved from slow beasts to a more upbeat kwaito, however NaakMusiq’s latest release Mamelani reflects a new dance sound called gqom from the suburbs and townships of Durban – and naturally, it’s a hit.
With with summer around the corner, we now know what the sound of this season will be!
