Top Billing chats to DJ Zinhle about motherhood, love and getting back into shape
House DJ’ing has long been a male preserve, that was until Zinhle Jiyane broke down the door for women DJ’s in this country.
Established as a popular artist in Africa and as far as the U.S. and U.K, she’s also gone on to a successful career as an actress and tv presenter. Zinhle is a club and radio DJ, presents live music shows on TV, stars in soapies and movies, plus she’s released an album, opened an academy and had a baby. And she somehow still gets time to hit the gym!
Her apartment is a photo-biography of the girl from KZN who learned mixing from her brother. At a gig one night, the DJ didn’t pitch, Zinhle stepped in and her career was born. As a radio mix DJ, Zinhle’s skills were noticed by Oskido who went on to release her compilation ‘Feminine Touch’.
It’s seven years since she opened SA’s first DJ academy for women. A hundred students have graduated from Zinhle’s Newtown academy and they all look to her life as one they hope to emulate.
