It’s the best of Southern, Eastern and all African design at Mozambique Fashion Week and we bring you all the highlights.
In 2005, Mozambique Fashion Week began on Tofo beach with just ten designers and models. Thirteen years on, it is an extravaganza, an adventure in design and culture and a privilege to attend.
Mozambique Fashion Week saw young designers exhibit along with established, international and Pan African labels. ‘Feel Our Colours’ was the concept and the runways would be alive with it for ten days.
With shows featuring top Mozambican and international djs, the collections practically danced down the catwalk. Along with Whitney came Angolan designers, talents from Botswana, Italy and from KwaZulu Natal, a collection by Mxolisi Luke Mkhize and a ready to wear women’s collection by Maputo’s own Alberto Tinga who's world classcollection is a clear favourite with the Mozambican audience.
The Pan African show reflected how mutually supportive Southern African fashion industries are to one another. While Mozambique benefited greatly from the exposure to world publicity, designers like Zimbabwe’s Nkanyyeziyethu Malunga also made headlines.
Among the venues was Maputo’s most famous Polana Hotel where we met Luigi Borbone -here from Italy to share his own collections and be inspired by local talent and flair.
Given a stage on which to shine, talents like Federica Peternelj showed sophistication and first class detailing and finishing. Mozambique – bravo – the world sees you!
