Foodie Miles Kubheka takes in the Excalibur chicken, waffles and rocking hot design of the Design Quarter’s hippest new restaurant, The Rock.
If you’re looking for a new hang out to close a deal or impress a date – The Rock may be your ticket. It’s a feast for the eyes, their menu reinvents classic favourites and just in from America – they have a coffee machine that brews it fresh, on tap.
The Rock Diner and Carnelian in Sandton’s Design Quarter has only been open a matter of weeks and already it is top of the city’s not-to- be-missed list. From a coffee bar to two distinct restaurants in one, all styled by renowned Greek designer Alexandra Nicolou - it is an indoor, outdoor celebration of the art of dining out. One which Niko Potamianos proudly helped to engineer.
Founder Chris Tatsakis is the rock on which it is all built.
Two private dining areas include a wine room in which these vintages are the hero – and The Living Room with this live garden wall. The menu is an adventure in Greek, Japanese, Italian and American influences which foodie Miles Kubheka was here to explore.
The staircase is the backbone of this design and it is impossible to resist seeing where it leads. The Carnelian Tapas Bar has a level of style and detail you would expect from a Hollywood set designer – which is thanks to Tarryn Fisher.
There is a sense of theatre to dining here but the food is the star. All meat and fish is sustainably sourced, ingredients are delivered twice daily to be extra fresh and you can taste it.
Eating out should feel like a treat and this is an establishment intent on delivering that feeling – even if you eat here three times a day.
