Top Billing features landscape artist Andrew Cooper There’s no camera or filter required as renowned artist Andrew Cooper walks us through the experience of painting one of his magnificent seascapes.
In a country of such renowned landscape artists as Pierneef, a modern heir to the tradition is the awesomely gifted Andrew Cooper. With his work in high demand overseas, he joined us at the ocean to show how the artist captures one day and place in time, for eternity.
Andrew was surrounded by sweeping scenery from childhood. First, in The Cape and when he was nine, his family moved to Scotland where his grandparents owned a small hotel. His mother and stepfather bought a restaurant on the coast of Cornwall in England and by the time a teenage Andrew returned to finish high school near Port Elizabeth, mountains and sea were in his blood.
It was only at the age of 29 that Andrew’s professional career began. Before that he was in marketing, then a family business - but he kept painting.
The process of adding layer upon layer is what gives his works such a natural suggestion of movement and a living, three-dimensional quality. Andrew is currently experimenting with painting in black and white. We eagerly await to see the new work from this South African master.
