Top Billing features Mathabo Kunene’s stunning Durban home
The spirit of hospitality is second nature to Mrs. Kunene who has three decades of experience cooking for guests from Michael Jackson to Nelson Mandela and it’s written into every detail of her magnificent Durban home.
Three years ago, Mrs. Kunene moved from her Glenwood house which had become the Mazisi Kunene Museum. Looking for a new home which echoed the welcoming feel of England’s old estates, her nose led her to this sanctuary.
The artworks in the house draws you in, balanced by the fresh flowers cut from her own garden, all year round. As well as being her own place in the sun, she welcomes local housekeepers to meet here as part of her ongoing dedication to breaking down barriers.
The classic Berea style of high ceilings with chandeliers in every room is one which she opens to learners from rural areas, bussing them in to be inspired, to think and dream big. She often sits in her garden watching the school children and enjoying the afternoon quiet when she can take a moment think up new genius dishes. Mathabo has arrived at her destination after twenty one years in exile. Here she finds peace, not in splendid isolation, but in the company of the youngest Kunenes and brotherhood of the people in her community.
