Top Billing features top chef Chantel Dartnall Top woman chef on the planet, Chantel Dartnall of Restaurant Mosaic prepares her taste of summer.
When South African chef Chantel Dartnall recently flew to Poland for the awards to decide the top female chef on the planet, she simply went to meet her idols. She returned - having won the title.
In the mid 2000s, Chantel returned from working in triple Michelin star rated eateries in London to join her parents, building a family hotel in Elandsfontein. Here, she opened her first restaurant, Mosaic and within four months she’d won a fine dining award. Today, she is the world’s leading woman chef and her restaurant is just one position shy of top spot nationally.
Her father Cobus Dartnall had a favourite French bistro in Pretoria where his daughter picked up her fascination with food and hospitality. And in her mother Mari Dartnall, she found a strong but feminine role model whose example has helped her thrive in a tough, male dominated industry.
Quietly going about her business in a quiet country garden and kitchen, Chef Dartnall beat competition from double and triple Michelin star rated chefs in Spain, France and the United States by boldly going where others hadn’t.
Chantel’s fresh take on modern cooking with a botanical touch won her the vote of chefs, culinary experts and food writers from across the world.
Since winning her latest award, Chantel has received a number of calls of interest and congratulations from international chefs whose restaurants she’s eaten in. As well as foreign guests wanting to visit her famous restaurant.
Of all women cooking incredible meals across the five continents, every day – she is the best. Big deals come any bigger than that.
