Top Billing meets the man behind the Slava Snowshow
While others created snowmen, Slava Polunin knew he could use snow to make a massive theatre production!
The world’s most illustrious clown decided he could make an entire stage production from snow and Slava’s snowshow is the captivating result. Lauded as a theatre classic by The Times in London and seen in a hundred and twenty cities, the Snowshow has evolved constantly in the two decades since Slava Polunin created it.
Watching his show or walking through his garden is like reading a picture book. There are no words spoken throughout the production and that draws audience’s and visitors imagination into the story, making it a journey unique to each individual.
His property is a 12th century mill house, reflecting he mind of a man who both created the Snowshow and, until recently, was artistic director of the oldest circus in Russia. Slava lives here with his family who are as involved in creating these fantasy worlds as he is. His son Vanya Polunin is a designer of installations and costumes in the show. He helped create his father’s art laboratory and after he first appeared on stage at the age of one, he’s toured with the family ever since. Little wonder that a gypsy scene features so prominently in their garden.
The clown in chief surrounds himself in the kind of environment he performed in during years as part of Cirque du Soleil’s “Alegria” show. Hundreds of artists, across disciplines have come through this place of imagined reality and gone on to create many shows. Without words, Slava prefers to speak in visual language. Slava’s Snowshow runs 26 July until 14 August 2016 at the Teatro Montecasino then at the Artscape Opera House, from 17 to 28 August 2016.Stand the chance of winning tickets to see Slava's Snowshow!
