This week's location was designed by Donald Nxumalo who, having taken top honours in the SABC3 Win A Home design competition, is proving that the judges got their decision spot on.
In this French styled house in Joburg, Donald found a meeting of minds with the owner Busi Dlamini. With Donald growing up visiting countless antique stores, and Busi owning a furniture store specialising in imported continental pieces, the client and designer clicked immediately.
Donald's aim and appreciation for timeless designs with a hint of history, class and glam are beautifully reflected throughout the house. Antique European pieces are mixed and blended with woven baskets and other African elements, keeping it grounded and relevant to the continent we call home. The relaxed and home-grown style created by the Afro-European juxtapositions create stunning focus points, while suggesting an age-old design heritage.
Home owners Busi and Abel Dlamini have lived here for thirteen years, raising their two daughters Sindi and Nelani in a relaxed spirit, surrounded by style but also by their much loved dogs and cats. Busi’s love for her garden comes through in the floral motif she designed for the balustrade. As a five year old growing up in Thokoza, Busi loved growing things with her mom and the tradition continues as she gets fifteen kinds of herb and thirteen different vegetables from her own garden.
