Women artists shine through as New York curator Tumelo Mosaka brings ground-breaking African art to the world’s attention.
So, you’re an artist whose had that flash of inspiration and created a work of rare genius. Then what? You need a man like Tumelo Mosaka – a curator whose waking, sleeping obsession is taking African art to the world.
Tumelo returned home to spearhead the Investec Cape Town Art Fair’s rise to an important position on the international art scene. He became an artist to comment on social injustices in eighties South Africa and went on to an impressive career in the U.S. where he is an independent curator in New York.
South Africa’s Kimathi Mafafo was exhibiting as part of SOLO, a special project of the fair dedicated to women artists and their way of interpreting the issues of the day.
Painter, video artist and sculptor Januario Jano works between Luanda, London and Lisbon – with a focus on the women who shaped him into the man he is today. Art is a conversation through images - in a language which keeps changing. So, a curator, like a good translator – is worth their weight in gold.
