Bringing his jazz and Afrobeat influences to Europe and the U.S. Zakes Bantwini has been touring abroad. He is shooting the new video of a song he did with the late Hugh Masakela and his latest release is another hit. The moment Zakes first saw Nandi Madida on TV, he knew that he would marry her. They met at the SAMAs and five years later, they are one happy family.
While romantic, Mr. Bantwini is fiercely competitive too. Drive and ambition were essential to Zakes, growing up with three siblings and twelve cousins in his grandmother’s house. Lucas Mufundisi just had to show him how to steer it. Of every accomplishment on the Bantwini CV, the one he is most proud of was being appointed as an Executive Head of A&R Sony Music Africa. A position which has helped him guide the careers of young musicians and keep them focused on their quality of music, not just on awards.
Rhythm is second nature to the man whose feet have always done the talking. Zakes continues to grow his international audience, pursue his dream of a Grammy and the man just keeps moving forward.
