International artist Megan Hess spends a day with Top Billing
International artist Megan Hess invites Top Billing to the South African aunch of her newest venture.
She’s the illustrator who exudes the glamour and class that her work is well known for. Top Billing was lucky enough to spend some time with artist Megan Hess on her first visit to South Africa.
Megan’s work sees her travel the globe. One week, her art will feature on the bottom of a luxury swimming pool in Dubai. The next, she will have illustrations being hung in homes from Paris to Manhattan and from here, she was headed on a book signing tour of her homeland.
Over pancakes, our very own Harmony found out that Megan’s characteristic style can also be found in a range of silk scarves and cushions. Her background in graphic design was a good grounding for applying her work more broadly, and her big break was illustrating the cover of Sex and the City.
The publishing world clearly recognised a talent, and we caught up with her while she launched her new venture in South Africa. This was no commission for a fashion house but a far more personal project. A children’s story about a character she had created, Claris the mouse.
Megan acknowledges the similarities between herself and Claris, the chicest mouse in Paris with a great love of fashion.
This release means that the Australian author/ illustrator has now published six books including one on The Illustrated Life of Fashion Icon, Coco Chanel.
Guests at the launch were lucky enough to rub shoulders with Megan and get a book or two signed. Even a signature by the artist needs to be done with style and class, and every Hess illustration is done with a tailor made pen which Megan named Monty.
