Jazz musician Nomfundo Xaluva performs for Top Billing
She’s the incredible local jazz musician whose singing can bring a tear to your eye. Top Billing loved spending a day with artist Nomfundo Xaluva.
While she is an incredible jazz musician, it wasn't love at first site, and Nomfundo only saw Jazz as her calling in her third year of studies. Now she is an incredible local talent with a string of other incredible avhievents under her belt.
Not only is she recording her third album soon, Nomfundo also likes to impart her wisdom on others, and enjoys teaching music at UCT where she was a student herself. Even though fitting it in to her busy schedule with gigs in both Joburg and Cape Town is a struggle, Nomfundo is born to teach.
As a black female academic she also thinks it’s important to bring her talents to this space and break barriers, while setting an example for others.
She’s not all work and no play though, and for a day of fun Nomfundo invited us out for a day in the outdoors with her niece Lilithia Xaluva. While they may be aunt and niece, these two look and act much more like sisters. From the electric scootering to the stunning wine farm we visited, it couldn’t have been a better day to learn about the incredible Nomfundo.
Embracing the new, she is now studying her MBA at Business School. As Vice Chairwoman of the SA Music Rights Organisation Foundation board, applying business insight to the arts makes sense to her. Nomfundo will record her third album in 2019. She has been testing her new music at a Joburg jazz club and the crowds are loving it!
