Luxury furniture designer Andrew Dominic features on Top Billing
If you’re a lover of beautiful things, you’ll love Andrew Dominic’s designs. His luxurious, hand-crafted furniture has made a splash in Europe but now he’s dropped anchor in Cape Town and you’re invited to his studio where wood is made into a thing of wonder.
Made to order in solid timber, sourced from sustainably managed forests in Europe and North America, Andrew’s work is distinctive from that of any other designer. His natural feel for wood took root in a childhood spent doing carpentry with his father in England. It was their shared love of the ocean and wood which defined Andrew’s career.
Andrew met his wife, Susie Williams in South Africa and she now works with him here at the studio while also running the website and social media.
Andrew’s designs are mostly made of Birch, Oak and Walnut tree, and he loves making his unique pieces that all tell a different story. According to Andrew, they key is to not have your design and type of wood compete for attention. Using lighter timbers for bold designs lets the form of the furniture be the champion, while simpler shapes allow the more characterful wood to shine.
This approach is proving successful and Andrew is attracting orders from as far as the UK, to the US and Germany.
While his hand-crafted products and hands-on skills are the heart of the operation, using computer software takes his design possibilities to another dimension.
With a company that’s still growing, an incredible catalogue, and the creation of many skilled jobs, Andrew has come a long way from the little rowing boat he made at the age of seven.
