“Farewell Ella Bella” is an ode to the South African landscape as much as it is a classic coming of age of story.
Starring Jay Anstey as the titular Ella, Sello Maake Ka-Ncube as her godfather Neo and of course the characteristic beauty of our South African wilderness as a co-star in its own right. Harmony Katulondi catches up with the stars and director Lwazi Myuzi in the picturesque Magaliesberg region. Lwazi wrote this drama after he was inspired by a family trip through the scenery our nation is famous for.
“Farewell Ella Bella” is an honest look at the pursuit of happiness & the heart of the film is a bond between a troubled young woman & her nomadic godfather. To best develop this dynamic of building a relationship on-screen Myuzi had to seek out two accomplished dramatic actors. Harmony and the guests are treated to a safari in the region where they chatted about the parallels between filmmaking & safaris. In both realms, one can find familiar character archetypes & what makes the story of “Farewell Ella Bella” is its focus on the relationships.

Our guests, Jay & Sello find themselves at the glamorous B’Sorah luxury tented camp retreat in Magaliesberg, a perfect getaway for the two renowned actors to escape from the throngs of city life & tuck into their next film scripts. While there they have the pleasure of meeting Nichola Durr, the manager who has the pleasure of living on-site all year. It’s a stunning glamping site, complete with a tree-infused shower, queen-sized bed, deck with a private barbeque area and all the bells & whistles our actors & presenter could hope for. The "roughing it" aspect of camping is almost not present at B’Sorah as our guests are treated to the culinary wonders of chef David Brown who keeps things authentic but with a touch of flair by serving a spread featuring sundried tomatoes, chicken, goats cheese, tofu with mango salsa, chilli and more delectable treats.
After the pre-dinner snack, our guests gather around the braai-pit fire, where the best tales were told before the era film and television as our guests relax and lament upon the paths their characters follow in the film. If you ever find yourself in need of a luxurious & undisturbed getaway in the heart Magaliesberg be sure to visit B’Sorah. Be sure to catch this tale of finding strength, growing up & the wisdom of our elders on the big screen as it’s the perfect way to appreciate the beauty of South Africa featured in the film.
Farewell Ella Bella releases in SA cinemas on the 17th August 2018.
