Top Billing attends the 2018 Durban Fashion Fair
With more than just an eye on tomorrow and trends across the continent, this year’s Durban Fashion Fair took a bold leap forward with its focus on Afro-futurism.
The seventh year of the fair saw it hosting forty designers and nine creatives from across Africa. eThekwini Municipality Deputy Mayor, Fawzia Peer has major confidence in what fashion can achieve for our economy, as this year also marks 20 years of the business fair.
The fair places a big emphasis on mentorship of young talent, and to make for sustainable, new fashion businesses, top design school graduates are mentored on how to break into then stay the course in a tough industry.
Zamabhele Ntshangase is one success story following this support and has proved this faith in her was well placed, designing a collection for young sophisticated proffesionals.
As for Rising Star award-winner Cari st Quentin, her sailing inspired theme line is sure to be popular with fashion lovers all over, while Mfundo Dlamini ‘street with style’ looks are perfect for helping the wearer feel confident in their clothes
Other Rising Star winners included Khulekani Sithole & Sicelinhlanhla Ngcobo took their cue from period Greek designs, and made beautiful tailored men's clothing.
The third and last winner, Zama Ntshangase’s ethnic-glam collection definitely stood out and is certainly taking her somewhere.
The designs on display were crowd pleasers for everyone who attended, including Fashion Director for the SAMAs when he was only twenty two, Siya Beyile, who says he is proud of how the talent is evolving.
Previous graduates of the mentorship programme are now established designers, employing many young South Africans, and the mission continues….
