Top Billing meets international singer Calum Scott
It was just two years ago that Calum Scott’s voice blew away the judges of a British talent show. Today he’s got a successful album, Only Human, and is in South Africa to perform live!
A former human resources employee, Calum Scott has come a long way since his days as a human-resources employee, and proved his mettle in the music industry when his hit DancingOnMyOwn sold seven million copies, many of them to his fans in South Africa.
On his first trip to South Africa Calum visited Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg and is humbled by the fact that he went from a pub crowd of 15 people to venues holding thousands.
Starting out as a drummer when he was a child, Calum proved to be a talented singer and songwriter. It was his sister who encouraged him to take it seriously and enter Britain’s Got Talent. Today his music proves popular largely due to his emotional openness and authenticity.
In his personal life, Calum is openly gay and the struggle that comes with it is one he has written about in ‘No Matter What’, a deeply moving and liberating song.
Songwriters can do with good brain food and we decided to treat him to a traditional South African braai with some local desserts.
Now he has the complete braai guide for those sunnier days in Hull, North East England!
