Everyone loves a happy ending, but in telenovelas, we want as much intrigue as we can possibly manage. The hit show Uzalo delivers that formula in style thanks to the lady behind the camera, producer Gugu Zuma.
A world away from politics, thirty year old Guglethu Zuma Ncube has forged her own path as an actress on tv dramas from Interrogation Room to Isidingo. Moving into production, together with her two co-producers, Gugu saw a gap for an Nguni language telenovela and spent three years exhaustively refining the concept of Uzalo for SABC 1.
The show sees a gangster and a priest raising each other's sons after they were switched at birth unknowingly. It also raises questions on what makes you who you are, be it upbringing or DNA.
Filmed on location in KwaMashu’s F-section, Uzalo is a real world series South Africa can’t get enough of. Seizing the public imagination as soon as it aired, the show now enjoys five million viewers.
