This year, the seemingly eternal singer and civil rights powerhouse Aretha Franklin passed the torch on to a new generation of women artists and activists. Here in South Africa, the proudest expression of her legacy are the likes of Miss Pru DJ and La Sauce – sisters doing it not only for themselves – but for each other.
To get perspective on what House DJ Prudence Sebalo and R’NB artist Sindiswe Magoso have achieved this year, Jade took them out of the city hustle, down to easy going Dulstroom, Mpumalanga.
True to the spirit of their weekend, the three had booked into a self-catering Equestrian Luxury Lodge. After all, this is a renowned fly-fishing estate and being self-made women they figured they might try catching dinner. It would add yet another string to La Sauce’s bow who already speaks four languages, including Arabic and isiZulu.
If that weren't impressive enough, the talented musician also has an amazing debut album titled Broken Lipstick. La Sauce has got where she has, at her age, by watching, learning and seizing opportunities.
She wasn't the only incredible local talent on the trip though, and Miss Pru held her own as the first female DJ to win a SAMA for her music video ‘Ameni’. In keeping with the theme of women empowerment for the weekend, Miss Pru believes in sharing blessings and helping others, and has taught fifty young women how to DJ too.
