Top Billing explores a local Mediterranean-style villa with Interior designer Dylan Thomaz
Join us this week on Top Billing as Dylan Thomaz shares his inspiration behind the interior design of his favourite house on the Atlantic seaboard.
Although not directly on the beach, this is a house best appreciated in bare feet. The garden boasts a winding path of discovery through vegetation which lends the feeling of a Caribbean seaside villa. Perhaps the best reveal are the giant, Cape granite boulders the house is built on – three of them. It’s like taking a hike on Lion’s Head, without even leaving home.
Having done other work for the owners, Dylan was given the freedom to creating a sense of warmth, depth and luxury, in an understated way. Living in a house where every sunset is worth toasting, the owners have ensured an ample supply of South Africa’s finest white and red wines. What makes their cellar different is how open it is, situated between views of the ocean, with the kitchen and garden leading off it.
This is the kind of house so favoured by writers Ernest Hemmingway in Cuba, and Ian Fleming in Jamaica. A place to write a great book, or maybe just to read one.
