Top Billing features a spectacular Joburg home designed around family A that client wants a home that’s unique and pushes the boundaries of texture, form and design - to architect Joe Van Rooyen, it’s the kind of brief he dreams of!
When Daryn and Louise Utian got married, dream destinations were top of their list. Then they found themselves with three boys and a couple of dogs. To them, family has become the best of the good life and every room in their house reflects that.
Their home features design that excites the eye, works practically and balances the natural with the modern. To achieve all of this took close on two years of collaboration between Daryn, Louise and their architect. Time well spent.
The way that style and function work together in every room has much to do with the architect also being the interior designer. Joe van Rooyen studied at the New York University for Art and Architecture and his work is highly artistic.
Blending these modern and natural finishes was crucial to Louise and Daryn’s goal of a design which won’t date. The balance of wood with artful, modern shapes extends from the furniture to the interior architecture. The house and garden have the integrated feel of a penthouse apartment where neither space ever feels separated from the other.
It was the best news to hear that Joe is also busy collaborating with viewers favourite from Win A Home – Tshepo Sealetsa. With Joe’s guidance, this dynamic talent is exhibiting at Design Joburg this weekend at the Sandton Convention Centre so make sure if you are there that you pay him a visit!
The boys’ parents have built a house with a young soul - to raise their children and then for themselves to gracefully grow old in. Everything in its time.
