Top Billing features the fashion range of Nhlanhla Nciza
The Mafikizolo songbird Nhlanhla Nciza recently debuted her new fashion collection in Johannesburg. Roxy meets up with her to hear about her inspiration and to see the African inspired garments up close.
At Johannesburg fashion week, Nhlanhla Nciza's ‘Evolution Collection’ revealed that Mafikizolo’s leading lady is as accomplished a designer as she is a recording artist. It was only last year that she and Theo Kgosinkwe won multiple awards at the SAMA’s and not one to sit still, Nhlanhla has used the time since then to great effect. Roxy joins her at her studio to meet the seamsters putting her beautiful and unique creations together. She took us behind the scenes to show us where she sources her materials, all the while explaining how her Western and African influences have contributed to her personal style, which she channels into her range. Her love for vintage shapes, exaggerated shoulders and modern fabrics influences her designs and drives her towards conceptualising items she would happily wear to any award ceremony. Roxy is fortunate enough to be treated to a private outdoor showing of some of Nhlanhla's favorites and she even gets to try on a modern, African glam-rock number!
