Top Billing catches up with singer Majozi as he releases his new album
To fans of local artist Majozi’s music, if you ever wanted to know the man behind the songs then his latest, self-titled album is a revealing biography and a must-have for your collection. It has themes of faith, hope, love and insecurity, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t still got a hard edge about him.
Majozi’s story has been told before in pieces. He was a bank teller for years before resigning to study music and do worship at a church in Salt Rock. 5FM’s Catherine Grenfell can be largely credited for the discovery of this incredible artist, and it was her who sent his first single to a record label.
He released his debut album ‘Fire’ back in 2016, and has since established himself as an incredible singer, song-writer, and it’s hard to miss his new sing 'Waiting' on the radio these days.
Since then he has been on an upwards trajectory, and his new, self-titled album is the culmination of a lot of hard work, inspiration and some heartbreak following the passing of his mother. The 11 tracks are an incredible addition to his catalogue, and include guests like the Soweto Gospel Choir.
It was all inspired by the song he once wrote, “I want your love” which he feels (and hopes) imparts hope.
With an album to promote, it helps that this artist has been conditioning himself with the help of friend, professional boxer and trainer Wade Hammond. His intense work outs have led to a physical transformation as well as a big style over haul (including the loss of his iconic hat).
What has stayed however are his beautiful tattoos which have a number of influences, such as his religion, mother, love of boxing and music.
