Top Billing meets the cast of Matilda
When the fantasy world of childhood collides with the cynical view of adults – the result is fireworks. That is the case with the beloved story of Matilda which has now been adapted in to a can’t-be- missed stage production with an incredible South African cast.
Adapted from the famous book by Roald Dahl, Matilda is about a smart, outspoken five-year-old girl who loves reading and can move things with her mind. The South African production is co-produced by Paul Warwick Griffin who says the incredible (and young) cast bring the production to life despite the incredible demands of the huge show.
The title role is played, on alternate nights, by three young South African actresses – Lilla Fleischmann, Morgan Santo and Kitty Harris, who are all incredible triple threats at a very young age.
The beloved role of Ms Honey is played by popular stage actress Bethany Dickson in her first production since having a baby, who says the production has won so many awards because it’s extremely relatable and has to do with standing up to bullies.
Another one of Matilda’s allies, Mayiyane Nompumelelo Mayiyane, delivers a showstopper performance as the school’s West Indian librarian Mrs. Phelps, and nails the perfect accent for the character.
Matilda runs at The TEATRO at Montecasino until the second of December, moves on to Cape Town’s Artscape for the holidays, from the ninth of December to the thirteenth of January.
