Top Billing meets the creative family behind Kipekee studios
The lean, understated designs from Kipekee Studio immediately caught the eye when they featured at two of South Africa’s biggest design expos. Meaning “unique” in Swahili, Kipekee is true to its name!
The furniture is created in Ballito by Michael and Kylie Bornman, a couple who met at prep school. She designs each piece and he makes them by hand.
After studying quantity surveying and working on copper mines Michael decided to embrace his love for furniture-making and working with his hands. His woodworking skills were honed through trial, error, and web tutorials.
When former teacher Kylie studied interior architecture, her flair for design was clear, and the two make an incredible partnership both in life and business.
Every piece of furniture produced is a combination of this couple’s many, varied talents!
The couple are currently busy preparing new pieces for One Hundred Percent Design this August and Kylie has taken on a new kids’ clothing business, but they always make time for their growing family!
