Top Billing meets up with actor Greg Kriek
Local actor and presenter search finalistGreg Kriek has worked hard to earn a respected film career in just six years
After competing in Presenter Search 2012 he trained as an actor in Los Angeles and already has credits in over forty movies, along with his international break in the Hollywood thriller Mr Monroe alongside Morgan Freeman.
Greg has a degree in global business leadership and is fluent in English, German and Afrikaans, meaning he has been able to make the most of local films along with a growing name abroad.
In his latest film, Recce, Greg plays a Special Forces soldier sent to assassinate a Russian Colonel in Angola. This driven film-maker landed his new role in the local film the hard way – by auditioning – and waiting almost two months before being confirmed for the part.
The wait worth it though, and for all the action of the film, there is an intense, human drama at the heart of The Recce. Greg has been praised for balancing a tough, personal tale with the many action sequences.
After six weeks of tough filming, doing most of his own stunts, playing a game of paintball with the team was a breeze, and while lifesaving star Ryle put up a good fight, Greg showed some of the determination that is taking his career to the top and won the game.
His success in the game is no different from his success in the industry and can be largely attributed to his ability to work hard and stay humble.
Greg got to The Cannes and Tribeca Film Festivals by juggling acting, directing and producing while doing all the hard work of film-making alongside his crews. This is how he has turned so many ‘ideas’ into finished ‘movies’. Despite the success that has seen him travel, home still plays an important part.
His mother is still his biggest fan, and the forest XX is a special place for the rare peaceful moments between films.
He might not be able to enjoy it again for a while as his career continues to pick up speed with a lead role in Deep End playing American surfer Cory Taylor, and he soon also starts filming a new sailing drama set for release in 2019.
The Recce opens nationwide on the twenty eighth of September.
