Top Billing talks to Mampho Brescia about her new venture
Top Billing attends Mampho Brescia's exclusive farewell.
Before we got to know Mampho Brescia the actress, she was a student for two years in Japan. Sixteen years later when the Japanese were after an ambassador to market their brand to South Africa – one candidate outshone all others.
Mampho has had several powerful roles in various daytime dramas and most recently as Iris Zungu, the calculating wife of a taxi boss on a local telenovela. Fluent in English and Sotho, Zulu and of course, Japanese – it is the presence of the woman behind the words which her fans find so compelling – whichever language she speaks in.
This leading lady has earned herself the nick name “Dragon” from Japanese mythology. Colleagues like Abdul Khoza see it as symbolising her power of transformation.
She is now embarking on a far different venture as she sets out to bring the best of Brand Japan to the South African market.
Mampho picked up style influences and skills too. She’s not sure she can still ride a bike, carry an umbrella and speak on her phone all at once - but she can still tie a kimono.
At her send-off we got a better idea of Mampho’s new role. She will travel to the Land of the Rising Sun to meet role players in entertainment, tourism and public services; establish relationships between South Africa and Japan and possibly be holding a few more events at Ferguson’s on 5th restaurant.
On hand to see her off were other high profile celebrities like actress Terry Pheto who has brand experience of her own.
With Ambassador Brescia doing the introductions, this should be the start of a beautiful friendship between our two countries.
