Top Billing visits a palatial home in Polokwane
The couple who commissioned this incredible Polokwane home met on a blind date in Witbank and it has coloured their approach to life.
Their faith that with the right person, anything is possible, translated to this build where they gave designer Frans Alexander full creative license – and never looked back.
Found in the entrance hall is a show-piece designed by interior designer Frans Alexander himself, and the Swarovski chandelier sets the scene for the palatial home.
With a massive one-floor design, the open style presented the designer with a creative challenge, particularly in the kitchen which is an unusual shape. To define it, he could either go with bold choices or a ‘less is more’ approach that draws you in. Subtlety won the day and it does again in a surprising work space which manages to be separate from the entertainment areas without shutting itself off.
As for the stunning Master bedroom the owners go to sleep and wake up in another kind of masterpiece. For the design Frans leans towards varying texture more than colour - painting walls, ceilings and skirtings the same colour and letting the play of light do the work.
While the interior is stunning, the home structure is equally stunning. Architect Andries Oelofse helped the clients after they chose an estate with large, one hectare stands. On it, he has designed a house which is grand but still in proportion to its natural surrounds. They also had to be able to build it within the twelve months allowed by the estate.
Another integral part of the team has been landscape designer Brett Hughes, a champion of using indigenous plants. For clients who grew up around the farm-style architecture of The Platteland, this is quite a shift, but choosing their team wisely and trusting the process has been a winning formula.
