When the idea for this incredible Dolphin Coast house was presented as three intersecting rectangles, it sounded like a breeze – but theory and practice were two very different things.
The long cantilevered wings of the house make it quite a vision. The design challenge however was to maximise the views through the dense natural vegetation.
By setting the building at a forty five degree angle to the road all bordering properties, the views became unobstructed, and work could begin.
Art is a significant part of the home and an array of custom-made furniture and fittings, each compliment the architecture seamlessly. The work is the hard-earned reward of interior designer Schane Anderson who was on board from day one.
More organic shapes are introduced in the home with biovin sea anemone lights, the winding staircase, and the curve of the living room furniture; bringing balance to the straight lines of the architecture.
The owners of the home grew up modestly in Chatsworth, and met while studying law and went in to practice together. A home in this coastal forest estate was their dream and landscaper Byron Pach helped bring that vision to life.
The couple who built here, first owned and lived in another property on the estate, so they knew how to make the most of the surrounds.
The spiral staircase is where the three rectangular forms of the house intersect. A bold, female portrait by Mabette Vermaak and agate stone lights lead up to the bedroom floor.
The lady of the house is a conveyancing attorney, dealing with other people’s property issues all day – so, coming home to this luxurious refuge is its own form of therapy.
The morning sun, from The East, animates every subtle colour choice in the calm, peaceful bedroom. The Bermuda blues and buttoned velvets add to the sense of tranquillity and a breeze off the Indian Ocean fills the air.
The house is a tale of human perseverance as much as design. It is testament to the problem solving of architect Nigel Tarboton and the dedication of the clients who worked so hard for this. Their children Rahul and Micara know what it took to get here.
