Top Billing tours the stunning Avis home in Camps Bay
Described as having “the most perfect sea and mountain views in Camps Bay” this stunning location went through a challenging revamp to become the beauty it is today.
When Ted and Cheryl Avis decided to open a branch of their environmental firm in Cape Town, Cheryl spent a year looking at houses on The Atlantic Seaboard. Eventually she asked the agent to take her back to the first property she looked at and on entering - she knew it was the one.
Together with architect Thomas Geh, they then spent three years renovating the steep property to make it just right.
The steep spot made the build difficult, and before the elevator was fitted, every bit of joinery and furniture had to be carried up into the house along the narrowest of walk ways – without damaging anything.
The house’s décor consists of the owner’s personal collection they have gathered over the course of their lives, and almost every piece has sentiment or an incredible story.
Ted and Cheryl’s personalities are reflected in the décor, drawn from the widest range of sources. They take a sustainable approach to furnishing, based on the ideas of Saint Francis, to re-use beloved items.
Cheryl worked on the design compositions and interior designer, Heather Cresswell, handled all the cabinetry work from the kitchen to the wine cellar and the built in cupboards.
Just one of the incredible talking points, Ted’s wine collection makes a stunning feature wall and it’s not just for show. It’s the perfect place for the family to spend time together after a busy day. At its heart the home is one for a family, and is the perfect forever home for the Avis family.
