Top Billing visits the stunning Francois home in Hout Bay
Director Greg Francois and his wife Tricia chose a stunning location for their Hout Bay home, but the build proved to be logistically challenging. After their contractor backed out, they project-managed the whole process themselves, and ended up with their dream home!
When they acquired the plot to build a new home for themselves and their daughters, the Francois family knew they’d bought a challenge. But with the steep incline came opportunity.
By staggering the design into a series of pavilions which tracked the fall of the mountain – they could limit how deep each platform dug into the site. This would allow every space the maximum natural surrounds and views.
Since few contractors dared attempt this build, Greg and Tricia project-managed it themselves, and even laid some of the building materials with their own hands.
Greg grew up watching epic commercials filmed in exotic locations. As a director he now creates these kinds of scenes on-screen and this house is a real-life version of those perfectly composed shots. On hand to help him was architect Rohan Young, whose vision made the challenging process more streamlined.
With meticulous planning and sheer determination, the Francois home fits in perfectly with their vision of a family home with room to grow and play.
When their daughters Amber and Sienna aren’t having a Sunday lie-in with their parents, they’re busy enjoying their own wing, complete with a loft connecting their two rooms.
What a stunning house to grow up - or happily grow old in. Greg and Tricia boldly decided to deconstruct traditional home design and they’ve been richly rewarded!
