Interior designer Kim Hutton creates an open-plan paradise in Camps Bay
When well-known interior designer Kim Hutton was tasked with taking a dated 90’s style home and turning it into an open plan entertainer’s dream with the instructions ‘work your magic, Kim!’, he created an ocean-facing masterpiece.
Kim has a well-established talent for transforming a home without having to knock down structures and rebuild them, a skill that has made him a favourite in a city where property comes at a premium.
The ocean home has a very natural and relaxed feel to it with a durable and ‘green’ design.
The house uses art sparingly and effectively. Many pieces were provided by the owners and they provide the soul and personal touch to the home. Blue is a favourite colour of theirs, so the cushions and fabrics took their cue from the art and shades of blue are a signature running through the interiors.
Part of Kim’s success as a designer is that he is an incurable collector and a great barterer. In one instance, one of the lamps in the home wasn’t for sale when he first saw it until he insisted he would not leave the shop without it.
In another instance, The riempie bench was bought in Graaf Reinet for the designer’s own home but he decided this house needed it more to balance out the mostly modern elements of the upstairs.
Pieces aside, certain elements of the home are specific to a Cape Town home, such as the small pool which can be used to save water and is only open to let it fill naturally with the generous rain which Cape Town continues to enjoy.
With Kim’s engineer having done such a good job of opening up interior spaces, the floor to ceiling glass on the stairwell sweeps the house with natural light.
Perhaps the most relaxing feature is the beautiful, airy and light yoga studio, which enjoys a view of Table Mountain and is complemented by artwork which the owner was given by her mother. She wanted these sentimental pieces to feature in a special place of reflection and this is it.
While this home specifically is sure to be a crowd-pleaser, Kim always says never worry about what others will think of your design choices. If people love you, they’ll love your style. But yes, having a talented designer to help you bring it to life, certainly makes all the difference.
