The idea of this edgy, dinner theatre experience in Sandton named after Alice in Wonderland is that you step into an alternate reality and open your mind to new possibilities.

With its stunning interior design courtesy of Tristan du Plessis, it’s easy to feel like you’ve entered a space where you can escape reality.

Tristan mixed sumptuous velvets and marble inspired by 1920’s New York clubs with the modern, exposed concrete of 2019, creating a magical ambiance.

There is no shortage of impressive features, including the solid piece of shimmering stainless steel acting as the ceiling in the entrance hall, setting the tone for the rest of the interior.

French curve panelling on the wall and ceiling paired with the contemporary edge of an illustrated wall mural, fur chairs and walnut wood panelling give the space a luxurious feel.

Hundreds of tassels make up an impressive chandelier with a screen of art nouveau mirrors reflecting the rich marble finishes, one of which is the stunning bar made of imported marble from Italy.

The tradition of cocktails, dinner and dance all in-one venue went out of fashion in the eighties and it’s due for a return. Alice & 5th incorporates performance in the dining experience and as a result multiple items are designed to be dual purpose stages, including the bar.

It’s not all about the interiors though, and the amazing food and drink on offer are enough to attract foodies from all over the country. It was in America’s prohibition era that gin cocktails became an art form in clubs like this and mixologist Bheki Khumalo continues the tradition with amazing and delicious recipes.

As for the food, talented chef Jacques Cronje has prepared a South African menu with a chef’s twist. He focuses on clear, evocative tastes, and prepares delicious dishes like the Alice salad which features fresh leaves, red onion, figs and mature cheese, as well as a wholesome oxtail for a main.

Overall it was a new experience, enjoying a slow cooked oxtail with herb dumplings while an acrobat, slung from the chandelier, performed a sultry, aerial ballet.

When they said check your expectations at the door and expect the unexpected, they meant it.
